Message from the President

Darlene Edgar RECE
President

The College will celebrate its 10th anniversary in 2019. As a member of Council since its inception, I have witnessed the tremendous advances the College has made in defining our profession and ensuring the public is protected.

I took on the role of Council President with great pride for the 2017-2018 year, and it is my honour to share a report on the College’s governance activities. Notably, we completed a three-year set of strategic priorities, which marked the final chapter of our 2015-2018 strategic plan.

One of our key priorities was to develop a practice readiness framework to support  a review of entry-to-practice requirements. Together, these will help to ensure that early childhood educators are entering the profession with the skills and supports they need to practice safely and competently. Council also approved an updated policy and process for approval of post-secondary programs  that meet the College’s educational requirement for entry to the profession.

As an established regulator, the College knows more about the people who make up the profession of early childhood education. Council conducted policy work to support the development of classes and categories of membership that would reflect the realities of practice in the sector. In doing so, this fulfilled another of our strategic priorities to better understand the diversity of the College’s membership.

Providing for the continuing education of its members is one of the duties of the College set out in the Early Childhood Educators Act, 2007. In 2017 the College completed another big, strategic milestone: we launched the Continuous Professional Learning (CPL) Portfolio Cycle. This two-year program is designed to help members increase their knowledge and skills and ensure quality professional practice throughout their careers. It also communicates to employers, families and the public that RECEs are members of a distinct profession that values ongoing professional learning. The College produced many new resources, including a Practice Guideline on Dual Relationships, to support RECEs’ ability to practice according to the updated Code of Ethics & Standards of Practice, 2017.

The College also turned its attention to the future with the development of a brand new three-year strategic plan. The strategic plan for 2018-2021 was developed collaboratively with input from College members and stakeholders. The new plan includes a mission, vision and values, and key priorities and initiatives that will guide us over the next three years.

This will be my final message as my term on Council comes to an end, though my commitment to the profession will continue. Participating in the governance of our profession through committee work or sitting on Council is a tremendous leadership opportunity and it’s one that has strengthened my sense of professional identity. It’s been great fun, too! I am grateful for the expertise and commitment of all the Council members and College staff I’ve had the pleasure to work with and can’t wait to see what the next 10 years holds.
