Message from the Registrar and CEO

Beth Deazeley
Registrar and CEO

As a regulatory body, the College’s mandate is simple and clear.  We are charged with the important responsibility of regulating the profession of early childhood education in the public interest.

Within the scope of this mandate, the College follows a rigorous process for establishing and delivering on key strategic priorities. This year marked a significant milestone as we completed objectives set out for 2015-2018 and developed the plan that will guide our work for the next three years.

One of our primary objectives has been to achieve excellence in the implementation of the authorities given to the College in support of its mandate. This included creating new policies and processes to address education requirements for registration and mandatory employer reports. We also engaged in discussions with government and stakeholders and advocated for changes to strengthen our ability to protect children and families.

To support members in practising in accordance with the updated Code of Ethics and Standards of Practice, the College developed a variety of resources specifically focused on recurring challenges faced by the profession, and explored new ways of connecting with our members.  We reached out to members for their expertise and experience. By building online content and increasing our social media presence, we engaged with more members than ever before.

As we developed our plan for the next three years, we sought input from members and stakeholders and considered the changing nature of the early childhood education sector.  We developed a vision of leadership in early learning and care, and key strategic priorities related to entry to practice, continuing competence and professional regulation. We also developed a plan to ensure the financial and technological resources necessary to deliver on this plan and oversee one of the largest regulated professions in Ontario.

We will soon mark the College’s 10 year anniversary. In its first decade the College defined the profession of early childhood education in Ontario with entry to practice requirements, ethical and professional standards and an ongoing learning requirement. Through strong governance and best practices in professional regulation, the College effectively addressed conduct that put children at risk of harm.

As we look to the future, we will continue to support excellence in the ECE profession and our vision of leadership in early learning and care by trusted, accountable professionals.
